What are you doing today to become your best self in the next five years?

Self-improvement is something that we’re talking about and thinking about as a culture all of the time. There’s a whole influencer economy out there devoted to helping people become their best selves. 

But the most important thing that any of us can do in order to achieve that five-year plan to become our best self is start doing the things today that will make that dream a reality. 

Thinking about things is great. You need a clear picture of what you want to be, after. And talking about your goals is the logical next step. 

However, the third, and most important step — taking action on your goals — is the one where people tend to fall off, and instead they just get stuck in a cycle of thinking and talking, ultimately feeling ashamed for not making progress because they haven’t done anything yet. 

So here are the five things you need to focus on TODAY to become the person you want to be in the next five years. 

The goals you set today will help you become who you want to be

Every day, I wake up and I write down my goals. Every single day. Some are short-term goals. Some are long-term goals. All of them are related to one another in some way. 

The point is, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t give thought and intention to what I want out of life. Every day, I remind myself that my day has a specific purpose, and in order to fulfill that purpose, I need to make good on the goals that I’ve set for myself. 

There are simply too many distractions in life, and having a clear sense of my day — and how those days will add up to where I’m at in the next five years — gives me all the motivation I need to keep going. 

The books you read today will help you become who you want to be

Have you ever thought about what you’re consuming and how it influences your mindset? 

The books you read, the media you’re consuming, the content you’re absorbing will directly influence how you choose to spend your time, not to mention what you’re thinking about and prioritizing. 

If I’m going to spend my limited, precious time reading, I want it to be something that is going to either inform or inspire me. Anything less is a waste of time. 

Sure, there’s always room for junk food and junk entertainment, but those things should always be the rare exception, never the norm. You are what you eat. 

The habits you adopt today will help you become who you want to be

I’ve always had a laser-focus, but I haven’t always been able to give myself the mental, physical, and emotional balance needed to be my best self. 

I’d put in the long hours, grinding and grinding, eventually burning myself out. Food was just fuel. Exercise was an afterthought. Neglecting yourself because you’ve given yourself over to the achievement of a bigger goal is just never going to work in the long run. 

So I started to develop better habits, but giving my day — and therefore myself — some much-needed structure. 

Yes, I work on my business, but also I work on my mental and physical self by showing up regularly to the gym, as well making sure to eat nutritious food and spending time with my family. 

My success is no longer partitioned, but can be seen across the entirety of my life. 

The people you listen to today will help you become who you want to be

Are your friends and mentors people who are focused on success and self-improvement? Are they celebrating your accomplishments and supporting you through the rough patches?

If they are, then you’re in the right circle of people, and if they’re not, then I suggest you walk away. 

We can’t help but be influenced by the people around us. It’s an inevitable part of human interaction. I think that we all know this, but the hard part is giving ourselves permission to separate from the people who don’t have our best interests at heart. 

Let me make this loud and clear: You do not need to attach yourself to people who don’t want the best for you. It doesn’t matter if they’re family. It doesn’t matter if they’re a friend you’ve had since childhood. 

If they’re not supportive of who you want to be and where you’re trying to go, then they’re not the ally you want them to be. Walk away. 

The action you take today will help you become who you want to be

Thinking about the insight I’m giving you is great. Talking to your peers about it is great, too. I want to help as many people as possible. But do you remember what I was saying earlier about thinking and talking? Doesn’t mean much if you’re not doing.

So before you waste any more time or energy on anything else, I want you to write down exactly who you want to be in the next five years. 

It’s time to get vulnerable. It doesn’t matter how big or how unachievable you think these goals are. Write down the big goal. And then write down all of the little goals that will lead you closer to achieving this big goal. 

After you’ve written down all of the little goals, now you need to underline all of the things you can start doing TODAY to make your goals a reality — AND START DOING THEM. 

Take time every day to recognize and assess your goals. Give your days structure. Give your life a deeper sense of purpose, which is to achieve the things you really want out of your life. It won’t happen overnight, but you will start to see results over time, and before you know it, you’ll hit that five-year mark having achieved some incredible things. 

And you know what? You’ll be in a place where you’ll set new goals, starting the process all over, but this time, you’ll be invigorated, inspired, and ready to take on a whole new set of challenges.
