In your 20s and still living in your hometown? Leave!
Look, if you’re over the age of 18, graduated from high school, and aren’t exactly sure what to do with your life… then you should leave home—even if just for a little.
Take it from me.
I left home at the age of 18, and now, years later, I’ve built incredible businesses, forged relationships and professional partnerships around the world, and am married to my life partner and other half.
Could I have done all this without leaving home?
Probably…
But it would have been on a completely different scale. And here’s the thing… I was born with a fire inside of me—one that was telling me that there was more out there than what I was currently experiencing…
And I wanted to see it for myself.
I didn’t want to spend my life wondering “What if?” I wanted to spend my life thinking, “What’s next?”
Leaving your hometown isn’t about creating space between you and your family and friends, it’s about facing new challenges, and forcing yourself to grow in ways that staying at home just can’t provide.
Your environment heavily influences your perception
Read that again.
Your environment has a huge impact on your perception of reality.
In the development of my own businesses and employees, as well as through the work I do with other businesses owners — both in previous businesses and currently at Cardone Ventures — I’ve determined that your environment plays a huge role in:
How you feel
What you think
How you carry yourself
What you care about
What you do
If you keep yourself in the same place, doing the same things with the same people, you’re going to continue to have the same experiences.
You’re going to continue limiting yourself and your potential without even realizing it, because you’re not experiencing anything that challenges you.
By leaving home and switching up your environment, you’re forcing yourself to completely change your focus. You’ll start making new friends based on similar interests, vs. maintaining relationships solely based on the fact that you grew up together.
And listen, if the people around you aren’t encouraging you, lifting you up, or adding value to your life… maybe it’s time to let them go.
The same people, places, and things = The same results
Think about it: Do you really think that people who have created incredible success in their lives, have changed the world through their innovations, and have heavily influenced the way we live, did so by never leaving their hometown?
To be perfectly clear: I’m not disparaging your hometown.
I’m not putting down your hometown friends.
What I’m telling you is that there’s a whole world filled with experiences, environments you’ve never seen, and seven billion people you’ve never met before.
Expand your horizons. See the world. Challenge yourself and your perceptions of reality.
You’ll develop a deeper sense of confidence in yourself, and you’ll start to see so many more possibilities for yourself and what you want to accomplish in your life.
And, you can take those experiences back to your hometown, and infuse them into your new business venture.
Odds are, you’ll be bringing something to the table that no one has ever experienced before, giving yourself an edge over your competition while also giving you and your business some well-earned notoriety for being and feeling different.
Don’t limit your potential. Take advantage of every opportunity.
There’s so much more to life than the same 10 people and the same 2 bars every weekend, even if they’re great people and fun bars.
New places, people, and experiences will be the key to your growth. Remember that.
Once you’ve left home and had these new experiences, you’ll develop an appetite for them, and will find yourself planning your next adventure, because you know the world is always so much bigger than where you are at any given moment.
Think about all the possibilities those experiences might have for you?
