These days, a lot of people talk about “living in the present.” In general, I think it’s pretty good advice, but I prefer to go a little bit deeper than that.
I believe, and I’ve seen in my own life and in that of countless others, that what goes around, comes around. Life circulates.
What do I mean by this? Well, if you’re not attaining the results you desire personally, professionally, or financially today, then odds are those outcomes are based on choices you made yesterday. So if you want to change those outcomes, what are you going to do tomorrow to change things for the better?
Where you are is a product of where you’ve been
Trust me, there are things that are broken from your past that have led you to where you are today. Leave them unexamined, and they’ll keep coming back around.
So if you want to fix your present to attain your future, you’re going to have to understand what broke in your past. What created the fears, anxiety, and stress that causes you to react, act, say, and do the things that you do? Odds are, you’re doing these things without even thinking about them.
Being able to identify those triggers and understand how they cause you to react in the moment will give you a whole new perspective about yourself. It can help you not only heal, but become a version of yourself — your future self — that you’ve always wanted to be.
Where you are is also a product of who you’ve been with
Your present self is a culmination of all of your life experiences leading up to now. The people you choose to surround yourself with, the media you consume, the food you eat, your level of physical activity, your professional experiences, where you’ve traveled to, and more.
These things inevitably create your view of the world, your values, your fears, your perception of success and failure — all of it. Here’s the part that’s hard for some to swallow: There have been a lot of people in your life who have probably projected onto you their own fears or false beliefs about what can be achieved in life.
These elements aren’t working for you; they are working against you. But that doesn’t mean change is impossible. In fact, you can elevate your picture to a new level of success. Never forget that visualization is your ability to paint a clear picture of what your version of success looks like.
Your future self requires a very specific, actionable vision of success
The more precise the picture, the more profound the impact. You need to be especially mindful of what you choose to focus on in your life. The more energy you’re giving something, the more power it has over you. I’m a perfect example of how this works.
A few years ago, I attended my first 10X GrowthConference with the specific intention of learning whether or not a partnership with Grant Cardone could elevate my personal, professional, and financial goals.
I knew exactly what I was looking for. I had a clear picture of my goals. And that picture was clear because I’ve spent years reflecting on my past successes, failures, and influences in order to make this crucial moment in my career and life be everything it could be.
Never underestimate the power of preparation
When I walked into GrowthConference, I was prepared. I knew I could be fully in the moment and clearly understand whether or not there was a natural fit with the Cardone team, one that could help me elevate my life’s overall impact.
Not understanding my past self could lead to clouded judgement in the moment, which would in turn negatively affect future outcomes that I wanted to achieve. Addressing any lingering broken beliefs about my past limitations was crucial to clearly seeing the opportunities that lay in front of me by partnering with Grant.
Addressing broken beliefs requires you to be excruciatingly honest with yourself — possibly even severing long-time relationships that might be toxic to your well-being. If you want to create a bigger impact in this world and if you want to achieve those things in a bigger, better, and faster way, then you’re going to have to consider how you always did things and question whether or not you need a shift in perspective.
This is how 10X people achieve 10X goals and live 10X lives. We get real with ourselves. We focus on who we spend our time with and how we spend that time. Nothing is wasted.
