Time travel doesn’t exist (yet)
Even though it’s always important to be moving forward and not dwell too much on the past, being reflective on your experiences so that you can learn from them and make better choices in the future is an important part of personal growth.
Here are 6 important things I’ve learned in my time in life and business, and I would encourage you to consider all the things I’d say to my former self, so you can achieve your personal, professional, and financial goals.
Write down your goals. And commit to them.
Everyone thinks they have goals. Most people have dreams. The difference? Taking the time to truly consider what your goals are, and writing them down, but also committing to them.
It’s one thing to have an idea in your head of what you’d like to achieve, but until that idea leaves your head, is clearly communicated to yourself and to the world and committed to, they aren’t much of anything. Write down your goals. Write down all of the things you need to do to make them happen, and commit to achieving each incremental step.
Find a mentor that has done bigger things than you have
Spending your time with the same people who have done the same things will only keep you in the same place. This moment is where you need to set ego and pride aside and look to people who are out there who have scaled greater heights than you.
They don’t need to have done the exact same thing that you want to achieve, but it is important that they’ve done things that are beyond your experience. Their perspective, their mentorship, and their advice are some of the most valuable resources there are. They’re an example of what’s possible, and they’re a well of invaluable knowledge.
Invest in yourself as early as you can
As soon as you can, you need to focus on developing your professional skills, you need to learn to become invaluable in your trade, and you need to find mentors.
Early in your career, where you have fewer commitments is where it’s important to devote your 10,000 hours to getting up early, working late, and making a better tomorrow for yourself. This is a real self-investment.
Go to the gym for your physical and mental health
People sometimes confuse entrepreneurship as a self-oriented pursuit because of how single-minded people can become as their business scales and grows. What so many don’t see is how lonely building a business can be, and how much some entrepreneurs don’t do for themselves. You need a physical and mental outlet.
Starting a regular gym routine, meditation, developing healthier eating and sleeping habits, or finding things that exist outside of your business that can give you a sense of fulfillment, so that when it’s time to go back to work, you’re healthier and more energized.
Read. Every. Single. Day. You’ll learn more than you can imagine.
What goes in must come out, but what if what you’re consuming is just mindless social media, television, and other sorts of junk food for the mind? Sure, it’s okay to spend some time doing things that are a little mindless, but if that’s all you’re consuming, then you’re not really learning anything of value.
You’re not feeding your mind or your soul, and the things that you’re probably thinking about aren’t mattering all that much, either. This is why I recommend reading about your industry, your craft, and the people who have achieved great things in your space every single day. You’ll learn. You’ll become inspired. And you’ll be unstoppable.
Don’t be afraid to cheer for yourself
It’s hard not to worry about how others perceive you. But if you’re not going to be your biggest cheerleader, then who is? You can be proud, you can self-promote, and you can showcase your accomplishments to the world without shame — and you should.
You’ll start attracting more like-minded people, and before you know it, you’ll have created a community of individuals who are having the very same experiences you do. You’ll have yourself, your mentors, and your peers, and it’s because you decided to take pride in what you do.
