I knew that I wanted to have a bigger purpose. I wanted to own a business one day. I wanted to be like the family I had watched start something from nothing and grow it.

My father had always been entrepreneurial out of necessity, because he put all of us boys through private school. He was working at a job not making enough money. So he had to start other businesses outside of his normal job in order to fund our private school tuition. Watching my mother and my stepfather build a business from scratch, I always knew that one day, I wanted to have a life through leveraging something beyond myself.

So the question is: what do you do if you’re not quite sure what your bigger purpose is?

I don’t think people need to know what their bigger purpose is on day one. They need to know what the characteristics are that would allow them to attain a bigger purpose at some point in time. Just because you don’t know what you want to be, or what that picture looks like five years from now, isn’t the end of the world.

What I can tell you is that every single thing you do starting right now will either put you in play for a bigger picture or take you away from it.

All you need to know is that you want to have a bigger purpose at some point in time. Then, agree to train yourself to put yourself in place so when you know what that is, you’re ready to succeed.
