Adopt these principles, and thank me later
I’ve had a lot of incredible experiences throughout my life. I’ve built great relationships, I’ve been all over the world, I’ve worked with countless business owners and entrepreneurs.. And these adventures and relationships have helped me create unbelievably successful businesses.
But it hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had my ups and downs. I’ve made mistakes, just like anyone else.
So, despite all the good fortune I’ve had, there are still things that I wish I could tell my younger self, so that I could avoid some of the more negative things that affected me…
But that’s not how time works.
However, my experiences and my insights are yours for the taking. Adopt these principles, and I know you’ll be thanking me later.
Stop buying dumb stuff
Your goals really should be focused on buying things that are going to help you make more money, not drain your bank account. It’s really easy to get hung up on wanting the coolest cars, the most expensive sneakers and clothes, and other things that feel high status… but these are all immediately depreciating assets.
Invest in real estate, invest in innovative companies and stock. Look for the things that are going to give you a return so you can invest even more for an even higher return.
Do you want to be working for money, or do you want your money to be working for you? Find things that you can invest in that can either become your main or passive sources of income. The cars, the clothes, etc. — they’ll come, but you’d be wiser to give your first focus elsewhere.
- Understand that life isn’t fair
Instead of focusing on the injustices of life to such a degree that it distracts you from living your life, focus your energy and attention on creating a remarkable life for yourself and for your family.
Building a great life for yourself means that you have the opportunity to inspire others, and to even provide mentorship to those who need it. Your success can build a community of success with the right mindset. Focus on the positive. Find the opportunities. Lift yourself, and those around you, up.
Go to the gym. Never stop trying to improve your health.
This is a habit that should be just as normal as brushing your teeth. Our society has quickly evolved from one that was largely driven, work-wise, by physical labor throughout the Industrial Revolution to where we are currently in the Digital Revolution, where an immense number of workers sit at desks or work from their phones.
We don’t move that much. Staring at screens all day, and getting fed information from platforms that are algorithmically designed to give you the bad news as much as possible is bad for the mind, body, and soul.
Having a daily gym routine has changed my life. It’s made my body healthier. It’s made my mind stronger. I feel great. I walk with more confidence. And it’s something almost everyone can do.
They just need to get started.
You’re not always going to have everyone’s support
The biggest successes, the most innovative thinkers, the revolutionaries — they’re unconventional by definition. We look back on certain people and hail them as geniuses…
But while they’re breaking new ground? We often treat them as though they’re insane.
This is the harsh reality that you’ll often face in life as you’re trying to get yourself to something new, be it a business, career, or some other dream you’re turning into reality. A lot of people just aren’t going to get it. And they’re not going to support you. But you have to keep going.
Stay committed to your goal and you won’t fail.
Only trading your time for money is a BAD idea
This is deeply related to spending your money on stupid stuff. It’s important for you to learn that your time is valuable. Your time is a resource. It’s the only resource that I know of that you can’t make more of.
Looking at life as nothing but a series of 9-5 jobs isn’t going to help you achieve the level of success that you really want. You need to look for passive income opportunities that will help you make money while you sleep! Seriously.
Make a webinar or write an ebook on something you know a lot about. Charge a fee every time someone downloads it. Start a YouTube channel. Be creative. Pretty soon your side hustle will become your main hustle that opens the door to an even more lucrative hustle.
Don’t look at life through the same lens your parents do. It’s not the same world anymore.
Spend more time betting on yourself than your favorite sports team
You can have all the hobbies you can fit into your life, but tell me this: How much time, energy, and attention do you give to things that are completely out of your control vs. the factors in your life that you can actually change?
There’s a reason that there are certain things that are referred to as distractions. If you’re giving too much of yourself to these things, and are unhappy with your life, then you’re probably not focused enough on building yourself.
